Snow Geese and Ross Geese Hunting in Spring

Date: 2017-01-15

Ross Geese have now been added to the species permitted in the spring migration hunt beginning Spring of 2016.  Previously the Ross Goose, often deswcribed as a small version of the Snow Goose, was not permitted to be shot and killed in the Sptin hunt, only the fall hunt.

Snow Geese and Ross Geese fly together and feed together making the distinction between the birds even more difficult.  It is possible to differntiate the birds in flight by the smaller body size and shorter neck of the Ross Goose.  This is substantially more difficult in poor light conditions.

Some hunters have been know to comment that the best to tell them apart is to shoot one of each.  The small one is the Ross.

Good Goose Numbers for Saskatchewan

Date: 2017-01-10

Outdoor Canada magazine recently reported that Saskatchewan hunters should expect good goose population from the farmland-forest fringe through the southern grain belt hunting regions.

The amount of water throughout the prairie pothole region continues to remain high providing excellent habit for waterfowl.  Past years have seen increases in number of duck and geese as well as expended ranges.
