How toTell a Ross Goose from a Snow Goose

Date: 2025-03-27

In your snow goose hunting bag limit, currently 20 per day (for both Spring and Fall seasons), you count both Snow Geese and Ross Geese. They are similar in appearance, especially in flight. Many hunters will simply refer to both species as "Snow Geese". 10 years ago, being able to tell the difference, really mattered. At that time, the Spring Snow Goose hunt was only a Snow Goose hunt, the Ross Goose was out of season. Now with changes to the regulations, both Ross Geese and true Snow Geese are in-season in both the spring and fall. The bag limit of 20 applies to the total of both combined. Now, being able to tell the difference is more of a personal knowledge situation. In a simplified summary, the Ross Goose is smaller with a shorter neck. It is this shorter neck that is the most telling distinction. For more help telling them apart, see Know Your Species.
